Really happy to find this book on Amazon, as during the course of my family history research I discovered that my great great grandmother had possessed a copy in 1864, when she and her family lost a lot of items in the Great Sheffield Flood of 1864. The book was listed in a flood claim record I found, along with prayer books, clothing and other sundry items. I'll never know whether she actually got to read it, but at least I know a little of what must have been her Christian beliefs.

This is a refreshingly gentle novel, showing the spirit of the young Mrs. Halliburton, left with 3 young children after the untimely death of her husband, who was a cleric in the Church. Life was very difficult for her with little or no income, but her determination to raise and educate her children in the circumstances that she encountered, are most admirable - and this while living almost - if not below, the poverty line!

It's a long story, good for curling up with on long cold days and in bed at night!

A story about facing and overcoming life's challenges at different levels of the social strata. It reminds us that sometimes sudden occurences can wreck or strengthen a household. In times when sustenance is wholly dependent on a father with only a small income to support a wife and children sudden illness or catastrophe may occur to bring the family to total helplessness and indigency. The workhouse, beggary or seeking help from relatives are the usual options unless there is a strong determination to help themselves. Quite the reverse for most today. Most look for immediate solutions from others rather than themselves. It is not always the wealthy that are successful but those with a purpose and determination to seek out every opportunity to help themselves. The Halliburton family began again from the bottom working at menial tasks to supply their basic needs. They were not ashamed of the work. By trusting in God, working hard, even helping others that were worst off than they were. The family developed a reputation for honesty and kindness which helped them to regain independence and earn the respect of the community. Having a goal and pursuing it no matter how long it takes is the lesson learned from this book. If they had let the injustice done by others fester in their minds, they would have not been able to look beyond to contemplate a future filled with successful endeavors. It is a great pity that our children are not taught or choose not to learn these lessons that are the foundation for building character and the key to a happy life. The book may be preachy and old fashioned but a wonderful read.
Great read!
Kind of boring.
A tale well worth reading in our current day and age of victimhood and entitlement. This book follows a family whose father dies leaving them destitute. It's message of faith, family, endurance and hard work, and charitable kindness from unexpected sources, weave together a wonderful story of survival, redemption, and hope. The story is of times gone by long ago, but the truths told therein are as or more valid today than ever. Well written and enjoyable to read. It's always nice when good wins out and the tables are turned .
This Christian novel is set in old England. The story is told well, and it is easy to identify with the characters. What I liked most about the book was the Christian emphasis and the ways in which the principal characters relied on God in living honorable, faithful lives. The book is fairly long, yet I hated to see it end.

If I had any criticism at all, it would be that the good characters seemed to have no faults, and succeeded every time, while those who were on the other side had few good qualities, and consistently failed to succeed at anything. The author did not point this out, though, and it did not detract from my enjoyment of the book.
I've read several books by Mrs. Henry Wood and have enjoyed all of them. I think she brings a humor to her characters that is lacking in almost any of her contemporaries except for Dickens, Trollop and Thackery. She lacks the depth of social commentary of those three, but there is still plenty to be taken from her stories.

The backdrop of this story, a small English manufacturing town trying to adjust to the changes brought by free trade policies is handled deftly throughout the book. I think that is sometimes less true with the smaller, and more personal, stories of the redemption of hard work and the rewards of selflessness. She doesn't handle these themes as delicately as she might and frequently beats the reader over the head with the same issues, which eventually becomes tedious.

In any case, if you like the above mentioned authors I think you will enjoy Wood's work. Of course her most famous book, "East Lynne" is a more gripping and coherent tale which you might read first to see what she can do when writing at her best.
