Infernal Desire is a tasteful variation of Pride and Prejudice. Fitzwilliam Darcy and Elizabeth Bennet need to escape the stiff walls of Netherfield House and each other. But a stunning rendezvous leaves Elizabeth flat on the ground after an attack of passion. There's nothing like a slap to get one moving in the proper direction. A heated discussion destroying hopes of marriage and a bruise on Elizabeth's face sends the Bennet sisters packing.

Providence re-routes lives to a babe's delivery by a most unlikely character, accidental princely connections and voyages to France. Fashion modeling and a plot to murder lead to headlines in two countries.

Can Elizabeth be found in time? Is marriage actually binding in a speeding carriage?

Desire Asunder, Book 2 of the Desire series is well under-weigh, taking all characters into new territories of conquests, physical and emotional. Pay-backs can be . . . well, undesirable to say the least!

Infernal Desire by no means Improper edition by Toni Martin Romance eBooks

This is one of the more bizarre variations of Pride and Prejudice I've read, going way beyond straining credibility and well into "you've GOT to be kidding me!!" territory. There's lots of falling in lust rather than in love, starting with Darcy and Elizabeth themselves. Darcy unexpectedly kisses her on the grounds of Netherfield, and Elizabeth is so overcome with her own passionate response that she actually swoons. Apparently, the best way to revive a lady in such a state is to slap her face really hard, which Darcy does, leaving Elizabeth with an unsightly bruise.

That's only the first in a series of disconnected over-the-top melodramatic scenes, as the story lurches from one unbelievable situation to another. The book switches back and forth among three main storylines, one which follows Elizabeth, one which follows Darcy, and one which follows Jane.

Here is the beginning of Elizabeth’s story: Elizabeth convinces Jane to accompany her to London, having overheard Darcy talking Bingley out of pursuing a relationship with Jane and wanting to avoid marital repercussions from her strange encounter with Darcy. On the way, their carriage overturns and a handsome gentleman comes to their rescue. Burgess Sheffield takes one look at Jane and falls in lust... er, love with her, and she with him. Elizabeth parts company with her sister and travels to Brighton with Mr. Sheffield’s sister Rose to visit Mrs. Gardiner's sister, Cassandra Tilghman. In Brighton, Elizabeth meets Harlan Sheffield, Burgess’ cousin, who immediately falls in lust…er, love with her. Mrs. Sheffield, Rose’s mother, is so enchanted by Elizabeth that she immediately decides she will host a ball in her honor. Mrs. Sheffield also arranges for Elizabeth to travel to Caen in France to attend a fashion exhibition and meet her designer, Pierre Brazeau, and have some fabulous gowns made specifically for her. Before leaving for Caen, Elizabeth also meets Wilson Tilghman, Cassandra’s son, who is an artist. He doesn’t fall in lust or in love with Elizabeth, but he does admire her beauty so much that he immediately starts to paint her portrait. In Caen, Elizabeth meets with the fashion designer Pierre, who suddenly needs a replacement to model his most remarkable and outrageous gown. Elizabeth finds herself on a fashion runway with a pillow over her abdomen as if she’s pregnant. On the runway, she swoons when she sees a man pointing a gun at another model’s fiancé and falls into the table where he sits, ruining his aim, saving the day, and creating notoriety for herself that travels all the way back to England.

That’s just the beginning of the storyline for Elizabeth’s, which goes on to additional heights of absurdity including a kidnapping. I should add that she has inexplicable visions of Darcy at various times during her travels. Darcy, meanwhile, is having his own implausible adventures, mostly accompanied and spurred on by Georgiana, which includes birthing a baby (I kid you not - I was flashing on Darcy channeling Prissy in Gone with the Wind: "I don't know nuthin' 'bout birthin' babies!!!") and then chasing after Elizabeth and trying to get her away from Harlan. Jane’s story is the tamest of the three, although she has to deal with a remorseful Mr. Bingley and decide whether or not to give him another chance. I don’t mind creative departures from the traditional Pride and Prejudice plot, but all of this is completely unrecognizable.

There are a lot of new characters to keep track of, many characters are omitted entirely, and others are departures from the norm. We never see Mr. or Mrs. Hurst, Mr. Collins, Colonel Fitzwilliam, or Lady Catherine; Mr. Wickham as well as the youngest three Bennet sisters have only cameo appearances with Mr. and Mrs. Bennet just slightly more. Caroline Bingley is much more sympathetic to her brother than in canon, while Charles comes across as an alcoholic who descends deeply into the bottle when things don’t go right for him.

Grammar and spelling are technically correct the majority of the time, but the author has a habit of over-explaining, both by having characters recount parts of the story that the reader already knows and by telling rather than showing all the characters’ thoughts and motivations. She also injects unintended humor by misusing some vocabulary words. In keeping with the melodramatic tone, characters have flowery unnatural-sounding speeches declaring their love.

The book ends with a cliffhanger, but I will not be proceeding to the second book in this series.

Infernal Desire by no means Improper edition by Toni Martin Romance eBooks Reviews

This story could have been so much better if the author had just spent some time developing the characters. There are several new characters in this story that we know nothing about and yet at the end we are still in the dark. There is never any real information on why Harlan acts in such a despicable manner.

Can Bingley or any man be as fickle as he is portrayed. Please learn the difference in meaning of "steal" and "steel" and stop writing such things as "he stealed himself".

There must be a second book because this story ends in the middle of Daddy's thought.
I HAVE READ MANY P and P VARIATIONS OVER THE YEARS , HOWEVER THIS STORY WAS THE BEST Novel IN MANY YEARS ! THIS MUST READ HAD A LITTLE OF EVERYTHING !
PASSION MYSTERY MUST I SAY MORE 😋
BOOK# 2 PLEASE !!!!!!!
A little absurd but a fun, clever, well-written read. Bring on Part 2 and hopefully some Colonel Fitzwilliam in the next one.
I liked the unpredictability of the story and I certainly hopes there is a book two. The ending was rather abrupt and left everything and everyone without a resolution!!!
Thoroughly enjoyed the way Toni Martin carried through with each character providing an insight to each. I'm waiting to find out how the story goes from how the story left me hanging as to what could possibly happen next.
Some of these variations start well then decline until you just want to get through it to see its resolution. This one actually improves till rereading it is desired. I thoroughly loved the fact that Darcy kisses Elizabeth twice but regrets it, it showed his ardour but also his desire to always behave as a gentleman. I never understood Jane's pining for Bingley although this one is more resolute than canon, it is wonderful that she opens herself up to another and finds his steadfastness compelling. The adventures and the kidnapping as well as the escape are all well done. Good story even better the second time.
I enjoyed reading this tale even though I know I will have to wait for the next book. It does not follow the usual story but this variation was well written with many romantic moments. I love the character of Burgess Sheffield who should give Darcy pointers on wooing a lady. He sounds divinely swoon worthy!
